Mudroom: Getting There!

Happy New Year!

Hope you all had a wonderful holiday season.  We enjoyed a great Christmas with Aaron’s parents and a very low-key New Year’s Day.

Speaking of Aaron’s parents- we always love when they visit from Iowa.  This time was no exception.  We were definitely down to the wire on creating a liveable space for them to stay,  but it came together in the last second.

While they were here, Aaron and his dad installed the drywall in the “mudroom”.

We hadn’t planned on putting our guests to work, but our drywall guy came out to look at the job, said he’d come out the next day, but then never showed up and stopped returning my calls.  Lovely.

As you may recall, the last time you saw the “mudroom”, it looked liked this:

Here’s what it looks like now:

Jeff built the amazing barn door for the bathroom out of reclaimed wood from our house and wood from the neighbors’ house.  We’re so pleased at how it turned out!

Cork floors were laid near the back door (where there weren’t original hardwoods) and we’ll restore the original wood when we finish out the floors in the rest of the house.

And… doesn’t the sheetrock make it a totally different room?  The guys’ sweat equity really paid off!

I want a really funky chandelier, but I have yet to find what I’m looking for so we’ll remain in the dark (literally) for now!

We’re at that point where a ton of work seems to show little payoff (i.e. I just put in an 8 hour day on trim painting and it looks… well… whiter?!), but we can’t wait to show you what else has been brewing/cooking/steaming in the rest of the house! *cough…kitchen…cough*

Have a great weekend and stay warm out there!

Fun Findings- Part I

If you’ve been thinking, “Enough with the new construction already… Where’s the old stuff?” then this post is for you!  I’ll warn you, though… It is not pretty!

Drywall and texturing were completed as promised last week and I’m the majority of the way through the painting of the addition.  I can’t wait to share some photos with you in the next few days!

This past weekend, Aaron and I were both home for the first time since………… I can’t even remember.  Coincidentally, the temperature lows were in the 30s, so we spent a huge portion of our time inside.

Like “they” always say, if you can’t construct, destruct.  That is just what we did…

The electricians are coming the early part of next week to install lighting in the current living room and fix any kind of questionable wiring they see now that the old insulation has been removed (you can read more about that HERE).  In preparation for that, I scraped the ceiling in the living room (only one more room with nasty popcorn!!!), we demolished the old water heater closet which was holding nothing but mold, and we removed the drywall near the front door for the electrician to work more easily.

Here’s the before of the [old] laundry:

What’s that? Oh yeah, the original back porch behind the drywall. Siding and mouse droppings all.

When we removed the door frame, we found seven (count em…) layers of wall materials. Whoa.

And behind the siding…

Which brings us to our next topic… the original living room.  Here are the “before” photos:
